A Special display at Lindisfarne Priory

Celebrating the return of the famous Lindisfarne Gospels to the North East, Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island is introducing a new display which delves into the lives of those who lived and worshipped at the Priory during the time the Gospels were created. Displaying intricately carved original and colourful replica 'naming stones' some dating back to the 8th Century the display will answer these questions for visitors making the journey to the original and spiritual home of the sacred text. The name stones give us very rare access to actual names - real people who may have known Cuthbert and Eadfrith. We are exploring who they might have been, who they knew and using their delicate memorials visitors can discover the craft and skills of the early 8th century.

In conjunction with this new museum display, a special family trail around the priory grounds and a series of events and activities from June- Sep mark a gospels revival at the priory this summer.

Normal admission prices apply - English Heritage members and under 5s go free.

Gospels on the Grass

Celebrating both the Festival of the North East and the display of the unique Lindisfarne Gospels at Durham Cathedral during the summer, we highlight the place of origin of the famous Gospels with a magnificent piece of land art. Specially commissioned for the setting of the Priory, the lawn will become the canvas for an artistic response to the incredible use of colour and intricate design in the ancient Gospels. This static display will be an eye-catching and emotive visual feast. Come and enjoy the spectacle on the authentic site of the Lindisfarne Gospels and experience the serenity of the intimate ruins. The artwork will be installed on site from Tue 25th June - come and see the artist at work, who will make time to answer queries as he sets about creating the piece.
